Day 9: All About Mom

I found a template for a Mother's Day card on the printer in the staff work room this week. Borrowing the idea from earlier in the week of answering questions intended for kids, I decided to make a copy of it and use the questions for my Mother's Day post this year. Just so we're clear, this was a card intended for a primary classroom so it isn't very long. That's fine, though. It won't be a long post today because I'll be spending the afternoon with my mother, for only the third time in many, many months. The underlined sections indicate where there were blanks I had to fill in to complete the text of the card.

LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT MY MOM.

MY MOM IS 79 YEARS OLD. (I did the math on this: My father is thirty years older than me, and three years older than her. I'm 52 for a couple more weeks, so 52 + 27 = 79. Which makes me think my sister and I are going to have to start thinking about what to do for what is kind of a landmark birthday year at the end of the summer....)

SHE LIKES TO GO FOR WALKS, VISIT WITH HER SISTERS, AND GARDEN. (I think a perfect day for her would be to walk to her sister's house and talk to her as they gardened all afternoon.)

THE BEST THING SHE COOKS IS CHICKEN AND DUMPLING SOUP. (I'm not kidding. I could live on this stuff. One of the things I plan on doing this summer is finally learning how to make it myself because she claims it's very easy, and very easy is about the level of cooking I'm at.)

HER FAVORITE FOOD IS FROSTING. (This is mostly an assumption, but I'm pretty sure I'm right.)

HER FAVORITE THING TO DO TO RELAX IS READ. (Her house is basically a scattered pile of future public library donations. She is my Number One fan, but not in an Annie Wilkes kind of way.)

WE LIKE TO TALK ON THE PHONE AND MEET FOR LUNCH TOGETHER. (At least we met for lunch before the world shut down. Hopefully this summer.)

SHE IS REALLY GOOD AT TEACHING. (Not only is she my biggest influence as a teacher, but she continued to work after she retired; not as a substitute, but she began working with adult English Language Learners through community education. She says it's a joy to work with one highly-motivated student at a time.)

AS YOU CAN SEE, MY MOM IS SPECIAL BECAUSE OF ALL THESE THINGS AND SO MANY MORE! HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY, MOM! I LOVE YOU!
