Sixteen mornings and afternoons Freddie has to spend asleep in his crate.
Three field trips.
One Track and Field Day.
Two days to pack, clean, and grade.
Several four-letter words liberally tossed around by the teachers (in the staff lounge) and the bolder 5th grade students (everywhere else).
Two tests to give.
Sixty-two report cards to complete.
About 38 math students who couldn’t care less about anything.
6 students who sat at their desks and read for fun before the morning bell today.
Maybe, maybe, five or six kids I will miss to any degree.
Seventeen people who still either have boots or snow pants in their lockers.
Three or four more homework assignments I want to send home purely out of spite, but probably won't.
At least 20 books bearing a sticker with my name that I hope will be returned to me before the last day of school.
Hundreds of math materials or manipulatives to either recycle, shred, or toss while making room for a new curriculum.
Eleven school lunches.
Five cabinets, 6 bookshelves, and one closet to organize and pack.
Four days of recess duty.
Two more times to take the long walk down the hallway to the art room.
When all of it’s over with — 79 days off.
