It seems every year I have lunch with people who check the horoscopes in the newspaper. Last year on my birthday I posted what it read for "Your Birthday Today," just to see how prescient the guidance of Holiday Mathis would prove to be. Here's what it said:
"You are highly intuitive now, reading the thought bubbles above people's heads. June gives you a stage for your talent. You have intense powers of focus and group support in July, so your ideas will take off like wildfire. September brings an important sale and the start of a lifestyle improvement. Scorpio and Libra people adore you."
A year later...
I'd like to think I'm intuitive, but on the other hand I'm also very literate, and usually not that skilled at picking up the subtext in a conversation. June was the first month I was able to try out the life of a full-time writer, which was awesome, but I don't know if you could call my small, dark air-conditioned office much of a stage. I can't remember much about July that would have required intense powers of focus, except, again, living in the revision cave, and I don't know if any writer would describe the painstaking, tedious work of revision as anything like wildfire. I don't remember any big sales in September or the start of any life improvements, but I guess I was starting a new school year with a great team and great classes. That should count for something. As for the Scorpios, the Libras, and their supposed adoration? Well, it seems they're hiding.
Here's what it had to say today, along with my annotations:
"The others will be trying to catch up with you this year (so...same as always then?). You'll be prolific. Whatever it is you love to produce -- smiles, phone calls, cookies, kind words, doodles, deals, your special product -- you'll turn out record amounts. (Looks like you better pare down that inbox a little bit, Carrie -- apparently I'll be keeping it busy.) July shows you carefully plotting (I'm definitely more plotter than pantser when it comes to writing, so this actually fits, and probably bleeds over into other parts of life as well), and August shows you going full force (I'd be more excited about "full force" if this was from December when the new Star Wars movie comes out). Sagittarius and Leo people adore you. (Hey there, all you Sagittariuses -- or is it Sagittarii? -- and Leos. What's up....? *wink*) Your lucky numbers are: 45, 24, 31, 1 and 17." (The omission of the Oxford comma in that number list bothers me, but I left it out for the integrity of the quote. If anyone sees any reason I should be excited about these numbers, I'd love to hear it.)
Again, it looks like I've got quite a year ahead of me. Because what other source are you going to rely on when it comes to predicting the future than the same page of the newspaper where you can find "Mark Trail" and the Wuzzles?
